    It's out YAY!!!

Portrait of a Lover by Julianne MacLean!

    Portrait of a Lover
A picture of deception...Annabelle Lawson knew nothing about the breathtaking stranger she met on the train - only that he'd make an ideal model for the budding young artist... and that she desired him more than she believed possible. But after she'd been seduced, she learned that she'd also been betrayed. The man she thought she loved was really Magnus Wallis - a scoundrel like his father before him, the loathed cousin of Annabelle's benefactor, the honorable Earl of Whitby.A landscape of love...No longer the naively romantic girl who would tumble for a rogue, Annabelle cannot avoid a reunion with the despicable Magnus, who wants to include her portraits in his new London gallery. She means to show him her coldest face - but upon seeing him again, her every intention melts from the heat of his touch. It is clear that Magnus still burns with love for her. But is he still the villain he once was, or can he be reformed into a man Annabelle can dare to love?

    Geraldo!!
    "Quote"
"Forget love and romance. When it comes to books, sex is selling. Thanks to the rising demand of erotica fiction, book publishers have been launching more new sexually explicit novels in recent months. And who can blame them? With more sex in movies and online, why shouldn’t things be heating up between the pages? Be sure to tune in to At Large as Laurie Dhue explains this phenomenon and exposes what exactly is steaming up the shelves."http://www.geraldoatlarge.com/blog.php?where_param=blog_id&blog_id=227

They interviewed Liz Maverick about Avon Red's IF THIS BED COULD TALK, and also Liate Stehlik, publisher of Avon Books-- "who says while the books are explicit, they are also tasteful and empowering."

You can watch the segment on your computer here. http://www.geraldoatlarge.com/video-archive.php (It's the "steamy novels" one, of course. *g*)

Geraldo is doing a show Thursday about erotic romance (thanks to that article in the USA today ) From what I understand they are interviewing Liz Maverick (she's in the first novella at Avon) and Sunny Chen in NY.
The show is supposed to air Thursday. Unfortunately, I don't get the station, here.
Here's the information to find network and air times in your area if you're interested. www.geraldoatlarge.com

    Article in USA today!
Romance novels for women get frankly sexual

    By Carol Memmott, USA TODAY

Plain old courtship just doesn't seem to cut it anymore. At least not with readers of romance novels.

Pleasure Beach by P.J. Mellor has a cover that says it all.

More women want more fiction about what's going on between the sheets, book publishers say.

"If you had said five years ago, 'erotic, hot, sexy romances,' people would have said 'What, are you crazy?' " says Kensington editor in chief John Scognamiglio. "Publishing goes in cycles. Erotica now seems to be the new hot thing."

Kensington introduced its erotica line, Aphrodisia, in January. Harlequin's Spice imprint hits stores in May, and HarperCollins will publish the first two titles in its Avon Red line in June. Berkley was a pioneer with its Heat line last May.

"Over the past few years, romances have gotten sexier," says Liate Stehlik of Avon Red, "And with the advent of Sex and the City and more sex in movies and online, there's a sexual aspect to all forms of entertainment that women are feeling more entitled to than they have in the past."

Mainstream bookstores also are finding erotica attractive.

Since Borders began carrying women's erotica in summer 2004, growth has been in the double digits, spokeswoman Beth Bingham says. "The customer is predominantly the existing romance customer."

But that doesn't mean customers fit a stereotype.

"They really appeal to a wide variety of women — 18- and 19-year-olds as well as women into their 50s and 60s," Harlequin's Susan Pezzack says.

Mainstream erotica has its roots in the romance genre, but these are not your mother's romance novels.

"There doesn't need to be that period of wooing, the developing of emotions," Scognamiglio says. "If the heroine sees a guy she wants to sleep with, she's just going to go after him."

Says Pezzack: "Spice novels are fiction, not romance. They can have a romance in them, but the stories themselves are not about the romance."

Erotica can be chick lit, paranormal, literary fiction or thrillers.

"Any genre will work," Pezzack says, "just so long as it has really good erotica scenes."

The heroines may have different personalities, Scognamiglio says, but they are all "very take-charge, very in control."

And about those book covers? Forget Fabio-like men and helpless-looking buxom women. Erotica covers, Scognamiglio says, are "elegant and upscale, but sexy ... (Aphrodisia covers) all show some sort of body part — a man and a woman or part of a man and a woman or a very hot, sexy guy."

    PLEASURE CONTROL COVER!!
In order to prove to the Grant Governing board that they are close to producing a libido suppressant, scientists Laura Manning and Jay Cutler must use themselves as guinea pigs. Jay fulfills his role by injecting himself with the serum. Little did straight-laced Laura know that her role would require candlelight, soft music, and silky lingerie. Her job is to entice him. If he doesn't get aroused they will know the suppressant works. If he does get aroused, however, Jay assures her, the possibilities are endless.

Romance Novels: Are They the Antidote to a Dreary Sex Life?

Women who read romance novels make love with their partners 74% more often than women who don't according to Psychology Today. Furthermore, when women fantasize frequently (as they do when they read romance novels), they have sex more often, have more fun in bed, and engage in a wider variety of erotic activities, according to a report in Psychological Bulletin.

Happy Valentines day!! My sister just sent me this!
A husband found himself in big trouble when he forgot Valentine's Day.
His wife angrily told him, "Tomorrow there better be something for me in the driveway that goes from zero to 160 in five seconds flat."
The next morning, the wife found a small package in the driveway.
She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.
Visiting hours for the husband at the hospital are limited due to the extent of the injuries...

    My take on Valentines Day

I'd personally rather receive flowers when they're not $400 a dozen, and when my husband doesn't feel obligated to buy them. That is just NOT romantic to me. If he wants to be romantic, then bring me flowers on a Thursday some day in Jan, or March or whenever, for NO reason at all!

Okay, back to my research on how to talk sexy and drive your man wild in bed...now if that's not a valentines gift for Mark I don't know what is.

    For all you Canadians!
Deborah Hale passed this information along.

The Ottawa Romance Writers' Association (Ottawa, Ontario) is presenting a romance writing conference for aspiring Harlequin authors."

The Sweet and Spicy Conference (named to reflect the many different lines of women's fiction that Harlequin publishes) will feature Harlequin authors and editors giving mid- to high-level craft workshops.

The conference will take place on September 23-24, 2006 in Ottawa, Ontario. Deborah will be one of the workshop presenters. They don't have any information on their website yet.

This sounds like a different sort of conference where it focusses on one specific publisher. Harlequin's a good choice since the head office is nearby and the company buys so many more new authors than any other romance publisher. I'm not sure what the 'partnered with Harlequin' means, but I would guess they'll be sending more than the usual one or two editors. Probably providing loads of free goodies, too!

    My office
There has been a lot of talk lately about what a writer's office space looks like so I thought I'd post my office. At the end of the day it looks like this. I like to clean it at the end of a work day but in the middle of the day, my desk is filled with papers, coffee cups, plates, etc. I like to start each morning fresh and clean. My hubby made all my furniture!
Hey Sylvia, your book is at the top of my TBR list.
